What is Brainspotting?

It is a groundbreaking therapeutic approach discovered by Dr. David Grand. Brainspotting operates on the premise that our field of vision can help us access unprocessed trauma in the brain. 

During a session, a trained therapist identifies a specific point (“brainspot”) in the participant’s visual field. After locating this focal point, the therapist assists the participant in safely accessing activation stored in the lower brain regions.

How does it work? What to expect from a Brainspotting Session?

1. A trained therapist guides the client to reflect on a troubling issue or trauma and monitor the physical response in their body.

2. Next, The Brainspotting therapist guides clients to find an “eye-position” correlating with manageable body activation. This can be done by scanning across the client’s field of vision with a pointer. Additionally, the therapist may simply ask the client to scan their eyes through the room and track the level of activation in their body.

3. Once the eye-position or “brainspot” is found, the therapist guides the client to maintain focus on that spot. The trained therapist will then support them with processing. Processing includes everything from sensations, emotions, images, memories and thoughts associated with the issue or event.

4. The client maintains focus on the brainspot where they proceed to access and process the emotional experience on a deep, transformative level. The therapist supports the client throughout the session by verbally checking in and monitoring their responses to the process. Additionally, they help the client create connections to different themes, patterns, and core beliefs that are observed throughout the session
