Somatic Therapy: Accessing The Body's Healing Potential

Somatic Therapy emphasizes the importance of the body’s role in helping us to process and move through distressing emotions, patterns of activation and traumatic stress that are stored in the body. This approach draws on PTSD research that understands that there is a dimension of ourselves that goes beyond what words can adequately convey, offering pathways to deep healing, as well as improved stress management and self regulation.. But what is Somatic Therapy and what does it look like in practice?

What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy is rooted in the understanding that the mind and the body are deeply interconnected. When we come to therapy to talk about the challenges or issues that we’re facing, the fact of the matter is that these things are often much more complex than our words can adequately describe. Many of us find that simply talking about things doesn’t always help.

When we’ve been through distressing moments in our lives, our brain stores information in the form of sensation, emotion, impulse, image, and meaning. This means that working through many issues in therapy must involve accessing the felt experience of the body, underneath the thinking mind.

Somatic Therapy is a way to incorporate the body into therapy. This means that therapy can now help you to not only understand some of underlying reasons behind the challenges and the issues that you’re facing, but also internally feel yourself processing through, repairing and resolving these issues within.

How Does It Work?

Guided by a trained therapist, individuals are encouraged to monitor and explore sensations in their body to: 1. develop emotional regulation and a felt sense of safety AND 2. to assist in the processing of distressing emotions and life experiences in a way that brings about clarity and deep healing. Here is a general outline of what you can expect from Somatic Therapy sessions:

1. In beginning stages of Somatic Therapy, you will spend time with your therapist practicing exercises and activities to support you in developing an internal sense of relaxation, stability and emotional regulation.

2. Over the course of several sessions, you will slowly integrate more challenging events and emotions into your sessions; this way participants can feel confident that they won’t be taken by surprise or suddenly become too overwhelmed during processing sessions. 

3. After several sessions, participants start to internalize and most importantly, integrate, their understandings of these patterns and life experiences at a deeper level within their body and mind, so that they not only have more clarity and self-understanding but also feel a change in how their body responds to situations that used create overwhelm and irritability.
